“What’s your name?” Su Xiao Nuan asked Nian Ling Jiao.
“Nian Ling Jiao,” replied Nian Ling Jiao. Su Xiao Nuan and Lu Zhan were both stupefied. They looked at Lin Feng. Lin Feng shook his hand helplessly and said, “Look! You see! Her name is Nian Ling Jiao! She’s really my friend!”
Lu Zhan whispered, “How strange. She never said her name and you did know it. Is she really your friend?”
Zhang Dui, who had remained silent the whole time, said, “This girl seems like she’s eighty percent amnesic, or she may also be mentally disabled. She said her name is Nian Ling Jiao, not because she knows her own name, but because Lin Feng keeps calling her that. She’s brainwashed now. She thinks her name is really Nian Ling Jiao!”
Su Xiao Nuan said, “Indeed. Zhang Dui has experience. I think the same. Lin Feng must have brainwashed her.”
Lin Feng was speechless. It seemed he had offended both of them. They didn’t even believe him anymore.
But Lin Feng knew what was going on. It didn’t matter whether Nian Ling Jiao knew him or not; as long as he recognized her, that was the main thing.. He had bumped into her by accident, so now nothing would happen to her anymore.
“What are your parents called? Where do you live? Do you remember? Think slowly. Don’t rush…” said Su Xiao Nuan. She was talking to Nian Ling Jiao as if she were mentally disabled.
Nobody had considered that she wasn’t disabled. She replied straightforwardly and clearly, “My father’s name is Zhang De Sheng and my mother’s name is Qi Xiao Hua. My home is in Linhai.”
Besides, when Nian Ling Jiao said her parents’ names, Su Xiao Nuan and Zhang Dui were dumbstruck. Those names were familiar! Just the day before, their superiors had issued a note where they said that the wealthiest man family in Linhai had a huge problem! Zhang De Sheng’s daughter had left the house, and he asked all the departments to help him find her.
Su Xiao Nuan opened some cupboards and suddenly slapped her thigh, she shouted, “It’s her! Her name isn’t Nian Ling Jiao, her name is Zhang Ling Jiao!”
Lin Feng looked at the notice. There were two pictures of Nian Ling Jiao, taken a few years before. Nian Ling Jiao had short hair in the pictures and looked fairly average, but now she looked beautiful, like a real woman. No wonder Su Xiao Nuan and Zhang Dui hadn’t recognized her at first.
Now that they could confirm her identity, Zhang Dui immediately wrote a report and contacted her family. Now, all they could do was wait for them to come and pick her up.
“Zhang Dui, I’ll stay with Nian Ling Jiao for now. You guys go and get back to work,” Lin Feng said firmly.
Su Xiao Nuan looked at Lin Feng curiously and whispered, “Lin Feng, don’t try and hit on her. We’re in a police station. If you cause trouble, don’t blame us for being impolite.” She frowned and grunted coldly at him.
Lin Feng and Nian Ling Jiao were now alone. Lin Feng asked, “Nian Ling Jiao, you really don’t recognize me?”
Nian Ling Jiao was afraid of Lin Feng. She frowned and shook her head. Lin Feng said, “Do you remember the World of Battles? Do you remember your father, Ancestor Tai? Do you remember the Region of the Eight Corners? Do you remember…?” Lin Feng asked Nian Ling Jiao all the questions he thought of. Nian Ling Jiao kept shaking her head!
Lin Feng gave up. He was terribly sad. He had found her, but she was like a stranger now.
At the same time, Lin Feng thought of a problem. Since Nian Ling Jiao wasn’t dead, it meant that Qing Huang Tian and the others weren’t dead, either. Where were they, and had they become completely different people as well?
No matter if they recognize me or not, I have to keep my promise. In the World of Battles, I promised I’d protect them my entire life. Even if they never remember me, it doesn’t matter. I’ll do my best for them to get to know me again. I am sure I will succeed!, Lin Feng resolved silently!
Nian Ling Jiao was scared and exhausted and fell asleep on her chair. She was quite pale. Lin Feng felt sorry for her. What had she gone through?
Only her current parents could answer such questions!
As it got darker outside, Lin Feng heard some steps and someone opened the door, a middle-aged man and woman. They came bustling into the room. When they saw Nian Ling Jiao asleep on her chair, they rushed over.
“Ling Jiao, where did you go? We were so worried!” The woman started crying and took Nian Ling Jiao in her arms.
But Nian Ling Jiao didn’t hug her back. She didn’t seem very enthusiastic. They didn’t look like a mother and her daughter. She seemed cold about everything.
Zhang De Sheng’s eyes were red and moist, but he controlled himself not to cry. He stood behind Nian Ling Jiao and caressed her hair. He pinched her cheek and whispered while sniffling, “You’re alright, that’s the most important thing…”
Su Xiao Nuan said, “Mister Zhang, please come and sign our report.”
Zhang De Sheng walked over to the table. Qi Xiao Hua calmed down and stopped crying. She looked at Lin Feng and Officer Lu and asked, “Are you the ones who saved my daughter?”
Lin Feng and Officer Lu nodded. Qi Xiao Hua bowed and said gratefully, “Thank you very much. You are real Bodhisattvas!”
Lin Feng finally had an opportunity to speak and asked, “Auntie, why do you owe those people so much money?”
When he asked, Qi Xiao Hua paled and burst into tears again. After a few minutes, she calmed down and said, “I’m sorry, but that’s personal.” She smiled apologetically. Lin Feng said, “Auntie, to tell you the truth, your daughter and I used to be friends and now we bumped into each other by accident. I’d like to know what you did to offend those people. You owe them a few billion yuan, I may be able to help you.”
Lin Feng sounded sincere. Qi Xiao Hua’s eyes gleamed. She stared at Lin Feng and wondered where her daughter and this man had become friends. At school? She had never heard or seen Lin Feng before.
“What’s your name?” asked Qi Xiao Hua apologetically.
Lin Feng was surprised. He smiled, “My name is Lin Feng, auntie.”
When Qi Xiao Hua heard Lin Feng, she tried to remember where she had heard that name before. After a few minutes, she smiled and asked, “You’re Lin Zu Wang’s son?”
Lin Zu Wang was the second wealthiest man in Linhai. Qi Xiao Hua was convinced all her daughters’ friends had lots of money.
“My parents passed away a long time ago, auntie. I’ve never heard of Lin Zu Wang,” Lin Feng replied honestly.
Qi Xiao Hua looked disappointed. She nodded and asked, “What do you do for a living? What’s your company’s name?”
She thought Lin Feng was wealthy, but his parents were dead and he seemed too young to be an orphan. Had he inherited a large amount of money?
Qi Xiao Hua kept thinking about money, so Lin Feng felt awkward. Not because he was poor, but because he felt sorry for this woman. Did she think of money all the time?
Lin Feng was convinced he was right. This woman probably worshipped money, probably because she had always been rich? She probably felt special and didn’t think poor people were qualified to talk to her daughter.
“I am a guard in an insignificant residential district, auntie. My salary is twenty-five hundred. I don’t have a company or anything.” Lin Feng said and waited for her reaction.
Qi Xiao Hua suddenly looked dumbstruck, “Oh… Ah… Eh… Not bad! Being a guard is a good job, even if the salary is low. It’s a peaceful and easy life.”
She went back to her seat next to Nian Ling Jiao, ignoring Lin Feng now. She had lost interest in the tramp!
“Auntie, you didn’t answer my question.” Lin Feng said, forcing himself to control his anger. He could see she looked down on him. If it weren’t for Nian Ling Jiao, Lin Feng would have left already.
“What question?” asked Qi Xiao Hua.
“Why do you owe those people so much money? I may be able to help.”
“I told you, it’s private business. Mind your own business, please. I don’t think you can do anything to help us.” Even though Qi Xiao Hua sounded polite and peaceful, Lin Feng could hear she had lost patience.
“Hehe. I’m not so sure. Since I saved your daughter, I think I can help her. Right?”
Qi Xiao Hua finally turned her head and saw Lin Feng’s mocking smile. After a few seconds, she said, “Lin Feng, you saved my daughter and I am extremely grateful, but I hope you won’t try and get involved in our family’s private affairs. I don’t want you to infuriate the people of the Brotherhood either! Ifyou do, they will attack our family. We don’t need you to make our situation even worse!”
